Zelenskyy Confirms Full Restoration of Satellite Speeds

The Ukrainian president stated that communications capabilities have returned to pre-restriction levels, stabilizing military operations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared on the morning of October 24 that the critical bandwidth restrictions on Starlink and Starshield systems have been completely lifted. This development marks the immediate return of the satellite networks to their previous operational capacities, a shift that military officials consider vital for the continuity of current defense strategies. The restoration allows the armed forces to operate without the significant speed caps that had hindered tactical movements in recent days.

In a video address to the nation, the president expressed gratitude to those who facilitated the return of these communications channels. He specifically noted that the systems are now functioning at the speeds they maintained before the limitations were introduced. Zelenskyy emphasized that the recovery began overnight and that by the time of his announcement, the connection speed had reached the specific threshold required for effective military use. He described the situation as a highly positive outcome for the ongoing conflict.

The primary focus of the restoration lies in logistics and air defense. The president highlighted the importance of stable high-speed connections for coordinating frontline supply lines. Furthermore, reliable satellite data is essential for tracking and neutralizing jet-powered Shahed drones. Without adequate bandwidth, the ability to process real-time intelligence and direct countermeasures was severely compromised, making the return to full speed a strategic necessity rather than a minor technical adjustment.

Prior to the official presidential statement, the Ministry of Defence and independent experts had already observed the improvement in system performance. Initial readings indicated that both Starlink and Starshield were operating at speeds exceeding 161 km/h. The ministry subsequently issued a formal confirmation, reporting that the connection had stabilized at speeds above 400 km/h. These figures verify that the infrastructure has returned to a robust state capable of supporting heavy data traffic required by modern warfare.

This resolution follows a period of significant disruption that raised questions about international support. Just days before the restoration, Zelenskyy reported that the equipment was limited to speeds between 130 and 161 km/h in several key sectors along the line of contact. These restrictions directly interfered with logistics and curtailed the effectiveness of drone operations, leading to concerns about the sustainability of Ukrainian defense capabilities.

The issue also generated political attention at the highest levels in the United States. On October 16, President Donald Trump stated that the White House had not been involved in the decision to limit Ukraine's use of the satellite systems. However, separate reports from The Telegraph suggested that SpaceX CEO Elon Musk had proposed the bandwidth restrictions to Trump. This exchange highlights the complex interplay between private tech companies and government policy in supporting Ukraine's technological infrastructure.

With the speeds now restored, the immediate focus shifts to maintaining this stability over the coming weeks. Military commanders can resume full-scale drone operations and logistics planning without the previous constraints. The situation serves as a reminder of how dependent modern military operations are on private satellite infrastructure, a dependency that continues to evolve as the conflict progresses into late 2026.
