Zelenskyy Confirms Full Speed Restoration for Ukraine's Satellite Network
After a week of throttled connections that hindered military operations, Kyiv reports that Starlink and Starshield speeds have returned to pre-restriction levels.

Connectivity speeds for Ukraine's critical satellite infrastructure have surged back to more than 250 miles per hour, marking the end of a disruptive week for the war effort. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Saturday that both the Starlink commercial network and the military-grade Starshield system are once again operating at their normal high speeds. The restoration began overnight, according to the Ukrainian leader, who stated on the social platform X that the service levels are now exactly where they need to be.
The recent slowdown had severely limited network performance to approximately 100 miles per hour. Ukraine's Defense Ministry confirmed that its monitoring systems verified the recovery and that connectivity is currently holding stable. Officials noted that the reduced speeds had created significant operational challenges. Specifically, the throttled connections hampered the ability to intercept incoming drones and disrupted various military missions along the front line.
Starlink has served as a backbone for Ukraine's defense strategy since the full-scale Russian invasion began. The network is essential for drone operations, logistical support such as delivering food and water to troops, and maintaining communications in combat zones. Zelenskyy emphasized that the service also plays a vital role in protecting Ukrainian forces from Iranian-made Shahed drones utilized by Russia. The return to full speed is therefore viewed as a critical operational milestone.
Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara attributed the resolution to direct dialogue led by the president. He stated that the outcome is significant for service members, drone units, and logistics teams. In his public statement, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to American officials, specifically naming members of Congress, the State Department, and President Donald Trump. This acknowledgment highlighted the diplomatic efforts involved in resolving the technical issue.
The cause of the initial slowdown had become a source of diplomatic friction between Washington and Kyiv. Ukrainian officials previously suggested that the U.S. government was responsible for the restrictions. Zelenskyy told NBC's Meet the Press that his team believed SpaceX acted on a message from the American government. On October 14, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wrote on X that Starshield is owned and controlled by the U.S. government. He added that any limits on speed or usage are decided by the U.S. military and ultimately by the president.
The Trump administration has maintained that it did not interfere with Ukraine's access to Starshield. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump declined to specify who ordered the restrictions. He remarked that he would not reveal the information even if he knew it. The president also defended Musk, describing him as a fair person and stating that the CEO would never do anything wrong.
The restoration of network speeds coincides with a renewed push for peace negotiations led by the United States. Russia has agreed to hold a trilateral meeting with Ukraine and the U.S. next month. The two sides have also reached an agreement on a localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied southern city of Oleshky. The White House announced that First Lady Melania Trump brokered this deal. The arrangement includes provisions for humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians amid a worsening food crisis in the area.
Combat operations continue in other regions despite the diplomatic developments. On Saturday, Ukrainian forces launched an attack on a chemical plant in the Russian city of Tolyatti. Meanwhile, a Russian drone struck a residential building in Kyiv's Obolon District, igniting a fire. These events underscore that the war remains active on the ground even as technical and diplomatic issues are resolved.
