Elena Rybakina has locked in a spot in the Ningbo Open final, securing a decisive victory over sixth seed Diana Shnaider with a 6-3, 7-5 scoreline. This result positions the world number one to defend her championship and potentially claim the trophy in consecutive years. The win serves as a crucial confidence builder for the Australian Open and US Open champion as she prepares for the remainder of the season.

Her path to the top spot was not without challenges. Rybakina arrived in the eastern Chinese city following a rough patch, which included a heavy loss in Beijing and a withdrawal from the Wuhan event due to a foot injury. Despite these recent setbacks, she managed to find her rhythm against the 13th-ranked Shnaider, though the performance required her to dig deep to maintain control.

The first set saw Rybakina take an early lead with aggressive play and powerful winners from the back of the court. However, a sudden drop in form forced her to fight for the set point, which she finally converted on her eleventh attempt. She acknowledged the difficulty of the match, noting that while she played the initial shots well, closing out the game proved to be a struggle despite numerous opportunities.

The second set mirrored the pattern of the first, with the 27-year-old continuing to battle with her first-serve accuracy. She managed to break serve to take a 4-3 lead but was subsequently broken to love in the tenth game. Rybakina responded with significant power to retake the lead before serving with greater assurance to seal the two-set victory.

Shnaider’s left-handed game style presented specific tactical hurdles for the defending champion. Rybakina noted that left-handers are less common on the tour, making it difficult to switch patterns during rallies. She expressed relief at managing to win in straight sets, a fact that will be relevant for the upcoming final since her next opponent also plays left-handed.

Rybakina’s opponent in Sunday’s final will be unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez. Fernandez earned her place by defeating Czech player Marie Bouzkova with the same 6-3, 7-5 scoreline in the earlier semifinal match at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre. Both players are left-handers, which means Rybakina will face a similar stylistic test in the championship match.

Following the Ningbo Open, the tennis calendar moves to Tokyo for the Pan Pacific Open next week. Rybakina plans to use this period to sharpen her game before turning her attention to the WTA Finals. She will begin the defense of her title at Indian Wells on November 8, making the next few weeks critical for her momentum.

When asked about the prospect of winning back-to-back titles in Ningbo, Rybakina remained measured in her expectations. She emphasized that success is never guaranteed, stating that she will fight and give her all in the final to achieve her goal.
